His passion for football was revealed really early and at the age of 7 he joined FC Porto where he played until he turned 15.
He then went to Boavista FC before signing for SL Benfica youth system at the age of 18, playing his last year as a junior with the Lisbon club. On October 18, 2012, he made his official debut with the main squad.
On July 17, 2014, Gomes signed for the Spanish club Valencia CF making his La Liga debut on August 23, starting in a 1–1 away draw against Sevilla FC. He scored his first goal in the competition on September 22, netting the second of a 3–0 away win against Getafe CF and finished the season with 37 games total, 33 of those on the initial line up.
After two great seasons at Valencia, in 2016 FC Barcelona was convinced with the talent and vision of the young midfielder and made a move to sign him on a 5 season permanent deal. He remained with the club Culé until 2018, winning many trophies, such as La Liga, Copa Del Rey and the Spanish Supercopa.
In the summer of 2018 he made a move on loan (with buying option) to Everton FC where he still remains, now with a 5 season deal, after activated the buying option on the summer of 2019.
After conquering the fans with his enthusiastic football and the surrounding community with his charming personality, he truly fits with the People’s Club by being of the most active and requested player in the community and the club’s initiatives.
Gomes also made his international debut for the Portugal National team on September 7, 2014, playing the full 90 minutes in a 0–1 Euro 2016 qualifiers loss against Albania but still made history by winning the UEFA Europa 2016, in France. He’s been regularly called to the Portugal National Team since then.
